UN Security Council: Membership and Candidates for Election


List of current UN Security Council Members (2019)

The Council is composed of 15 Members: Five Permanent Members, and ten Non-Permanent Members elected for two-year terms by the General Assembly.

Permanent Members:

●      China

●      France

●      Russian Federation

●      United Kingdom

●      United States


Elected Members (with end of term noted):

●      Belgium (2020)

●      Côte d’Ivoire (2019)

●      Dominican Republic (2020)

●      Equatorial Guinea (2019)

●      Germany (2020)

●      Indonesia (2020)

●      Kuwait (2019)

●      Peru (2019)

●      Poland (2019)

●      South Africa (2020)


The Security Council Presidency is held by each of the Members in turn for one month, following the English alphabetical order of the Member States’ names.

 

List of Member States elected to the Security Council for 2020

On 7 June 2019, elections were held for five non-permanent seats, for two-year terms beginning January 1, 2020.

The positions are distributed along regional lines

●      Two for the African Group

●      One for the Asia-Pacific Group

●      One for the Latin America and the Caribbean Group

●      One for the Eastern European Group

The winning candidates were: 

●      Niger & Tunisia (Africa)

●      Vietnam (Asia-Pacific)

●      Saint Vincent and the Grenadines (Latin America and the Caribbean)

●      Estonia (Eastern Europe)

 

List of Member States seeking election for the Security Council for 2021

In June 2020, elections will be held for five non-permanent seats, for two-year terms beginning January 1, 2021.

The available positions will be distributed along regional lines: 

●      One for the African Group

●      One for the Asia-Pacific Group

●      One for the Latin America and the Caribbean Group

●      Two for the Western European and Others Group

 
The candidates declared to date are:

●      TBD (Africa) – Kenya has indicated its intention to launch a campaign in June 2019

●      India (Asia-Pacific)

●      TBD (Latin America and the Caribbean)

●      Canada, Ireland, & Norway (Western Europe and Others)
